Situational Overview
Operational knowledge attrition is occurring in industry due to the ever present aging situation and the increased length in years between turnarounds in an operating unit.
Some units can have a hundred startup procedures. For an operator to remember all these procedures and have instant recall, or to take time to dig out the correct paper procedures during a startup, is egregious and self limiting. Each piece of equipment, like a compressor or fired gas heater, will have individual procedures, and the unit will also have overarching macro procedures which dictate when steam is brought in, cooling water, hydrogen circulation, etc.
DOMINUS introduces IRIS, the Operational Copilot that advises operations through the startup sequence and when encountering key problematic situations.
Active Operational Copilot
Forcing an operator to manually dig through a hundred paper binder procedures during a high stress cold startup, especially when five years have passed since the last turnaround, is a recipe for operational drift, delayed timelines, and potential process safety situations. IRIS shifts the paradigm from a manual document search to an interactive, live bridge between the microscopic equipment level steps and the macroscopic plant wide timelines:
The Macro Gatekeeper: IRIS tracks the overarching startup phases (e.g., establishing cooling water loops, vacuum pulling, hydrogen circulation sweeps), and applies the static array of operating procedures, P&IDs, and the processing of live multivariable tags to rationalize the operating dynamics.
Contextual Equipment Launching: When the macro timeline dictates it is time to light a fired gas heater, the operator doesn’t go searching for the heater binder. IRIS instantly surfaces the exact subprocedures for that specific equipment asset tag directly onto the Independent Operator Console Display.
Live Dynamic Interactive Walkthroughs
Instead of reading a static document, the operator interacts with a live checklist that adjusts to real world plant conditions.
Live Tag Interrogation: As the operator moves through a startup checklist, IRIS reads the live 1 second Honeywell Experion tag streams behind the scenes. If a procedure step says “Verify lubricating oil pressure is above 50 PSI before engaging turning gear,” IRIS pulls the active pressure tag, validates it, and highlights the step green on the screen.
“Am I Clear to Proceed?” Queries: Operators who have rotated in from other units can explicitly text or speak to the workstation: “We are ready to introduce steam to the stripper column. Based on active trends and the current P&IDs, what block valves must be manually verified in the field right now?”
Answers With Their Source: Every answer from IRIS shows where it comes from, down to the procedure and step. When the plant’s documents do not hold the answer, IRIS says so. She never invents a procedure number or setpoint.
